"Aries and Cancer never work out." You've probably heard verdicts like that. Yet real astrology love compatibility isn't decided between two sun signs — it plays out between two complete natal charts. That's what synastry is all about, and it's far subtler, and far more encouraging, than any magazine ranking.

Why sun signs alone aren't enough

Comparing two people by their sun signs is like judging two books by their covers. The Sun is only one point in your natal chart among a dozen: it says who you are at your core, but nothing about how you love, communicate or handle your emotions. Two "incompatible" signs on paper can have Moons in perfect harmony; two signs "made for each other" can clash on everything else.

The good news: there's a much finer method, one astrologers have always used.

Synastry: overlaying two skies

Synastry means overlaying two natal charts — yours and your partner's — to see how the planets of one converse with the planets of the other. You look at three things: which planets respond to each other, at what angles (the aspects), and into which houses of your chart the other person's planets fall.

The result isn't a score out of ten but a map of affinities and frictions: where the connection flows naturally, where effort will be needed, and what each of you awakens in the other.

The key points to compare

The Moon — emotional needs

This may be the single most important point in a synastry. The Moon describes what you need to feel safe: tenderness, space, words, presence… Two harmonising Moons understand each other without speaking; two Moons in tension will have to learn each other's emotional language.

Venus — the way you love

Venus shows how you express and receive affection: with passion, gentleness, steadiness or playfulness. When one person's Venus echoes the other's (or their Sun, Moon or Mars), attraction and complicity settle in easily.

Mars — desire and energy

Mars speaks of desire, drive — and how you argue, too. A good Venus-Mars contact between two charts is a classic of physical chemistry; a Mars in friction can produce sparks… in both senses of the word.

Mercury — communication

Mercury is often underrated, yet a couple spends a lifetime talking. Two compatible Mercuries understand each other in half-words; in tension, you'll need to learn to rephrase, slow down, listen differently. That's work, not doom.

Sun and Rising — identities and styles

Cross-chart aspects

Once the charts are overlaid, you study the inter-chart aspects: the angles your planets form with the other person's.

• Conjunctions, trines, sextiles — flow. Energies circulate effortlessly: you feel understood, carried, at home.
• Squares and oppositions — friction. Sometimes uncomfortable, these aspects are also powerful engines for growth: they point to exactly where the relationship makes you evolve.

A synastry with no tension at all can even feel flat: a little friction keeps desire alive and pushes both of you to grow.

Activated houses: where the other person "lands" in your chart

The final layer of the reading: which houses of your chart the other person's planets fall into. Their Sun in your 7th house? The relationship feels like an obvious partnership. Their Venus in your 4th? They awaken your longing for home. Their Mars in your 10th? They fire up your ambition. The houses tell you where, in your life, this person brings light — or movement.

"Incompatible signs": the great myth

Let's say it plainly: no couple is doomed by the zodiac. Lists of incompatible signs rest on the poorest comparison possible — two Suns — and ignore the dozens of contacts that make a real synastry. A relationship is built with attention, dialogue and time; astrology is not a courtroom, it's a mirror. It can illuminate your dynamics, but it never decides for you.
