Chiron: The Wound and the Healer of the Natal Chart

Chiron is often introduced as "the original wound," and the phrase is as unsettling as it is intriguing. Yet it is incomplete: in the symbolic tradition, Chiron points less to an injury than to a tender spot that, by being crossed again and again, eventually turns into a skill. Here is what this small celestial body really is, what its placement can illuminate, and above all what you should never make it say.

What is Chiron in astrology?

Chiron is a real object, discovered in 1977 by the astronomer Charles Kowal. Long classified among the asteroids, it actually belongs to the family of centaurs: icy bodies whose eccentric orbit weaves between those of Saturn and Uranus. It takes roughly 50 years to circle the Sun.

This orbital position shaped its entire symbolic reading. Saturn traditionally represents the limit, the structure, the reality that resists; Uranus, rupture and liberation. Two useful clarifications. First, Chiron is a modern addition: it does not exist in classical astrology, and some astrologers do not use it at all. The myth of the wounded healer

2. Calculate your natal chart and spot Chiron's glyph, which looks like a key (⚷). You get, for example, "Chiron 12° Cancer, house 4."
3. Note the house first, then the sign: the area before the color.
4. Look at the aspects with your personal planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars) and the angles. Without a tight aspect, Chiron often stays discreet in the chart.

If you don't know your time of birth, stay with the sign and the aspects: it is less precise, but it is not nothing.

Points to watch

• Chiron is not a diagnosis. No astrological placement describes a trauma, a disorder or a psychic state. A chart knows nothing of your real story.
• Don't hunt for your wound at all costs. Some people recognize nothing in their Chiron, and that is perfectly normal. Manufacturing suffering to fit the symbol helps no one.
