Lilith in Astrology: the Black Moon and Its Meaning

Lilith intrigues people because she carries a mythical name and a sulphurous reputation. In a birth chart, though, the Black Moon is neither a curse nor a secret power: it is a calculated point that symbolically marks the part of yourself you learned to hide. Here is what it really is, how to locate it, and what it can shed light on without boxing anything in.

What exactly is Lilith?

The Moon does not orbit the Earth in a perfect circle, but in an ellipse. An ellipse has two foci: the Earth sits at the first, and the second is empty. The Black Moon Lilith most commonly used in Western astrology corresponds to the direction of that empty focus — in other words, the lunar apogee, the point where the Moon is farthest from us.

This technical detail is telling: Lilith is not a celestial body, it is a geometric absence. Nothing shines there. That is probably why the tradition projected onto it everything that has no place elsewhere: untamed desire, anger deemed unseemly, the refusal to bend. In the myth, Lilith is the one who leaves rather than obey.

The different "Liliths": don't mix them up

• The mean Black Moon — the most common one. It moves at a steady, smoothed pace. This is the one shown by default in most software, including Cardologia.
• The true (or osculating) Black Moon — the same point, but calculated without smoothing. It oscillates a great deal and can move backwards, which sometimes places it in a different sign from the mean version.
• The asteroid 1181 Lilith — a real rock from the main belt, unrelated to the lunar apogee.
• The "Waltemath Black Moon" — a hypothetical second satellite of the Earth, whose existence has never been confirmed.

When two sites give you two different positions, it is almost always this choice of definition that is at play, not a calculation error.

Locating your Lilith: the step-by-step method

Lilith's position depends only on the date (and slightly on the time), not on the place — unlike the Rising sign. Here is how to obtain it, then how to check the order of magnitude by hand.

1. Get the exact position using an ephemeris or a chart calculator. You'll get something like "Lilith 18° Pisces, house 5".
2. Note the sign: it describes the colour of the sensitive theme (Pisces: fusion and blurriness; Capricorn: control and legitimacy…).
3. Note the house: it indicates the area of life where the theme most often plays out. This is the more concrete of the two pieces of information.
4. Look at the aspects it forms with your personal planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars): without a tight aspect, Lilith often stays in the background.

The numerical check

The mean Black Moon travels through the zodiac in about 8.85 years. From this we can derive its speed:

• 360° ÷ 8.85 years ≈ 40.7° per year;
• 40.7 ÷ 12 ≈ 3.39° per month;
• 40.7 ÷ 365 ≈ 0.111° per day, i.e. a whole sign (30°) in about nine months.

A worked example. Suppose your ephemeris shows Lilith at 10° Aries on 1 January of a given year, and that you were born on 1 September of the same year, i.e. 243 days later. We calculate: 243 × 0.111 ≈ 27°. We add: 10° + 27° = 37°, which exceeds Aries' 30°. We subtract 30 and move to the next sign: 7° Taurus.

This estimate gives you the right sign in the vast majority of cases, and serves above all as a safeguard: if a site announces a sign far removed from your result, it is probably using the true Lilith. For the exact degree and the house, an ephemeris remains indispensable — and the birth time then becomes necessary, since the houses depend on it.

What Lilith can shed light on day to day

Lilith predicts nothing. It offers a working hypothesis: wherever it sits, something has probably been repressed, and is now seeking to return. Three areas where this reading often proves useful.

In love

Lilith frequently touches the relationship to desire and to authenticity within a bond. Symbolically, it may point to a part of yourself you reveal late, or not at all — an intensity you believe is too much, a need you don't dare voice. One possible avenue: spot the moments when you "rounded off your edges" to stay likeable, and what that cost you. Lilith is not an invitation to burn everything down; it is an invitation to stop apologising for existing fully.

At work

In house 6 or 10, the Black Moon often evokes a tense relationship to authority or to the place you allow yourself to take. This can show up as difficulty claiming what is owed to you, or on the contrary as clean breaks when a framework becomes stifling. Seen positively, this same energy is an excellent detector: it signals early on the situations where you won't be able to stay yourself. For any binding decision — a contract, a resignation, a dispute — astrology sheds light on your inner state, not on the file itself: legal or financial questions are settled with a competent professional.

This is perhaps its most precious contribution. Lilith frequently marks shame: what we don't talk about, what we find "too much" in ourselves. Points to watch

• Don't make it the centre of the chart. Lilith is a secondary point. The Sun, the Moon and the Rising sign remain the structure; it is a nuance within it.
• Beware of spectacular vocabulary. "Femme fatale", "dark karma", "curse": these phrases sell well but describe poorly. What is repressed is neither evil nor magical.
• Check the definition used (mean or true) before comparing two readings.
• Don't justify a behaviour by your Lilith. "That's my Black Moon" doesn't explain everything: a symbol sheds light on a tendency, it excuses nothing.
• Remember that nothing is fixed. A chart describes potentials and tensions, never a destiny written in advance.

Not for the sign: the Black Moon moves slowly, so the time almost never changes the sign. The house, however, depends entirely on the exact time, just like the Rising sign. Without it, stick to the sign and the aspects.

No. In symbolic astrology, a square or an opposition describes a tension, not a verdict. These aspects most often signal a lively theme, one you can therefore work with. Many people describe their tense aspects as their main driving force, once the tension is understood rather than merely endured.

Are Lilith and the South Node the same thing?

No, they are two distinct points. The South Node is linked to where the lunar orbit crosses the ecliptic and refers more to acquired reflexes; Lilith marks the apogee, therefore the distancing, and points to what has been set aside. The two can echo each other in a reading, without being confused.
