In a natal chart, the 7th house is the sector of the "you." It describes the way you enter into a relationship with another person as an equal: spouse, business partner, work collaborator, sometimes an open adversary. Understanding this house means understanding what you seek — and what you delegate — in the face-to-face encounter.

Where the 7th house sits in a chart

A natal chart is divided into twelve houses, which are the areas of life. The 7th house begins exactly opposite the Ascendant: its cusp has a name of its own, the Descendant. If your Ascendant is in Aries, your Descendant is in Libra; if it is in Cancer, your Descendant is in Capricorn. Always the opposite sign, always 180° away.

It is also an angular house — like houses 1, 4 and 10. In traditional astrology, angular houses are considered the most "visible": whatever sits there tends to express itself clearly in one's life, rather than in the background.

By natural correspondence, the 7th house is associated with the sign of Libra and with Venus, its ruling planet in the tradition. Hence its coloring: balance, reciprocity, contract, the art of relationship. A word of caution, though: this correspondence is a reading guide, not your chart. Classic textbooks attribute four families of subjects to it, all sharing the same common denominator: a relationship between equals, committed and generally formalized.

• The committed couple — marriage, a stable union, life as a pair. Lighter or budding romances belong more to the 5th house.
• Associations — a business partner, a lasting collaboration, a professional duo.
• Contracts and agreements — anything signed between two parties, including the legal framework of a union or a company.
• "Open enemies" — the traditional phrase points to open opposition: litigation, an identified competitor, a conflict out in the open. Here again, a face-to-face.

A useful nuance: the 7th house speaks less about "who you are going to meet" than about what you seek in the other. It often describes qualities we do not spontaneously attribute to ourselves and that we recognize, admire or reproach in a partner. Symbolically, it is the mirror of the chart.

Reading your 7th house in four steps

The method comes down to a handful of gestures, to be carried out once your chart has been calculated (date, exact time and place of birth).

1. Locate the sign of your Descendant. It gives the general "color" of your committed relationships: a Capricorn Descendant suggests a search for reliability and durability; a Gemini Descendant, a need for conversation and movement; a Pisces Descendant, an aspiration toward fusion and gentleness. These are leads, not labels.
2. See whether any planets occupy the 7th house. A planet there takes on particular importance. Venus may indicate a strong emphasis on harmony; Saturn, a serious relationship that is sometimes slow to commit; Mars, a bond lived with intensity, where confrontation is never far; the Moon, a deep need for connection in order to feel secure. An empty 7th house is nothing to worry about: most charts have more houses than planets.
3. Identify the ruler of the 7th house — the planet that governs the sign of your Descendant. Its position (sign, house) shows where the relational question often plays out. A ruler of the 7th in the 10th house, for example, suggests a link between relationships and professional life.

The 7th house is never read on its own. It forms an axis with the 1st house, that of the "I": appearance, impulse, way of approaching the world. One does not go without the other. The better you know your way of being yourself, the more clearly you read what you expect from a partner.

This axis tells of a balance to be found between assertion and adjustment. Too far toward the 1st, the relationship may lack listening; too far toward the 7th, you risk dissolving into the other's expectations. • Saturn or Mars in the 7th house condemn no one. These placements suggest demands or an intensity, not a relational fate. The rest of the chart always adds nuance.
• The time of birth is decisive. The houses shift by about one degree every four minutes. Without a reliable time, the Descendant remains uncertain: it is then better to stick to the planets and their signs.
• House systems differ. Placidus, Whole Sign, Koch… they do not divide the sky in the same way. The cusp of the 7th remains the Descendant in most of them, but house occupancy can vary from one system to another.
• Contracts, disputes, health. If a legal, financial or medical matter is at stake, astrology is no substitute for a qualified professional. Seek advice from the competent person.

An empty 7th house: is it a bad sign for love?

No. With ten celestial bodies for twelve houses, several houses are necessarily empty in almost every chart. A 7th house with no planet is then read through its cusp sign and the position of the ruler of that house. It in no way indicates an absence of relationships.

What is the difference between the 7th house and the 5th house?

The 5th house is associated with play, seduction, creativity and budding romances. The 7th house concerns formalized commitment and lasting partnership. Many relationships symbolically begin in the 5th and continue into the 7th — the two sectors complement each other more than they oppose.

Is the Descendant a portrait of my future partner?

This is a widespread reading, but a reductive one. The Descendant mainly describes your way of entering into a relationship and the qualities you tend to seek or project onto the other. It does not draw up the description of a person yet to come.
