Astrological Seasons: The Rhythm of the Zodiac

Astrology · ~8 min read

Every year, the Sun appears to travel through the twelve signs of the zodiac, one sign after another, spending roughly a month in each. This cycle traces out the astrological seasons: a symbolic calendar that runs alongside the weather seasons and gives the year a rhythm, a shifting colour. To understand this rhythm is to give yourself a gentle marker for reading the thread of the months — without locking your life inside it.

What is an astrological season?

Seen from Earth, the Sun moves along a band of the sky called the ecliptic, divided into twelve equal sectors: the signs of the zodiac. Each year, it enters a new sign around the 20th of each month and stays there for about thirty days. This period is called an astrological season. "Aries season," for example, runs roughly from 20 March to 19 April: these are the days when the Sun transits through Aries.

The cycle traditionally begins with Aries, which coincides with the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere. The tropical zodiac, the one most widely used in Western astrology, is in fact anchored to Earth's seasons rather than to the actual constellations: it is the Sun's movement relative to the equinoxes and solstices that sets the starting point.

The twelve seasons and their tone

Each season carries the symbolic "colour" of its sign. You can read it through two simple keys: the element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and the modality (cardinal = to initiate, fixed = to stabilise, mutable = to adapt).

The dates shift by a day or two from one year to the next, because the astronomical year does not fall exactly on 365 days. If you were born near a changeover (on the "cusp"), only a precise calculation of your chart can settle your real Sun sign.

Seasons of the sky, seasons of the Earth

In the northern hemisphere, the four cardinal signs open the four weather seasons: Aries in spring, Cancer in summer, Libra in autumn, Capricorn in winter. This correspondence feeds much of the symbolism: Aries "getting things started" echoes the awakening of spring. Be careful, though — this is an image, not a physical law — and in the southern hemisphere the weather seasons are reversed, while the astrological seasons stay exactly the same.

What it can illuminate day to day

The current season acts like a light placed on one area of life. During Taurus season, many people feel a need to slow down and savour; during Sagittarius season, a desire for space and for new projects. These are not commands, only invitations that you can choose to follow.

A few concrete, unpretentious uses:

To go further, you can cross the season with your own chart: Leo season does not "weigh" the same depending on where Leo falls in your birth chart.

Points to keep in mind

Frequently asked questions

Are the astrological season and the weather season the same thing?

No. The astrological season depends on the sign the Sun is passing through (about a month per sign), while the weather season depends on the tilt of the Earth. They meet at the four great turning points of the year (equinoxes and solstices), but they do not overlap exactly, and they differ from one hemisphere to the other.

Is my own sign's season a good time for me?

It is often experienced as a period when you feel "in your element," well suited to taking stock. This remains a symbolic pointer: nothing guarantees an ideal month, and the other seasons have their own riches too.

Why do the dates change a little each year?

Because the Sun's passage from one sign to the next follows the real astronomical year, which is slightly longer than 365 days. From one year to the next, the entry into a sign can therefore slip by a day or two.
