The 12 Zodiac Signs: Dates, Elements and Their Meaning

Astrology · ~9 min read

The twelve zodiac signs form the grammar of astrology: twelve ways of expressing an energy, spread along the circle of the sky. Here are their dates, their element, their symbolism — and above all what you need to understand that you are much more than a single sign.

What is a zodiac sign?

The zodiac is a band of sky divided into twelve equal sectors, which the Sun travels through over the course of the year. Each sector bears the name of a constellation and corresponds to a range of dates. When we say "I'm a Libra", we are really talking about the position of the Sun at birth: this is the sun sign, the best known — but far from the only one.

Each sign is a tone, a way of being and acting. It is associated with a range of dates, an element (Fire, Earth, Air or Water), a modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable) and a ruling planet. These markers dictate nothing: they offer a symbolic reading grid to understand yourself better.

The cycle begins with Aries, around the spring equinox, and unfolds over twelve periods of roughly a month each, all the way to Pisces. This order is no accident: it follows the seasons and tells a story of progression, from the initial surge of spring to the sensitivity of late winter. Understanding this thread helps explain why each sign has its own flavour.

Dates can shift by a day depending on the year: if you were born at the very beginning or very end of a period (known as a "cusp"), only an exact chart calculation can settle the question.

The 4 elements of the zodiac

The twelve signs fall into four families, called elements. This is often the most telling key to grasping the "colour" of a sign.

These portraits are symbolic pointers, not labels. A chart almost always blends several elements: that balance is what makes you unique. To go further, our dedicated guide to the four elements in astrology explores how they interact.

The 3 modalities: cardinal, fixed, mutable

Alongside the elements, another grid sorts the signs into three modalities, which describe their rhythm rather than their colour. They combine with the elements to refine each portrait.

Each sign is therefore a unique blend of one element and one modality — Libra, for example, is a cardinal Air sign, both relational and initiating. It is this combination that gives each sign its own nuance.

Sun sign, moon sign, rising sign: the difference

Reducing a person to their sun sign is like reading a single page of an entire book. Three points form the founding trio of a chart:

Many people say "I don't recognise myself in my sign". That's common: your Moon and your rising sign nuance, complete and sometimes contradict your sun sign. Discovering all three often changes everything.

How to find your sign

For your sun sign, simply find your birth date in the list above. Easy — unless you were born on a cusp, right at the hinge between two signs.

For your moon sign and your rising sign, a date is not enough: you also need your exact time and place of birth. The rising sign can change roughly every two hours. A calculation tool handles the coordinates and time zone for you — it's the most reliable option and avoids guesswork. To understand the whole picture, read how to read your natal chart.

Frequently asked questions

Can you be "between two signs"?

Astrologically, the Sun is always in a single sign at any given moment. But if you were born very close to a sign change, calendar dates can be misleading: only a precise calculation of your chart, based on your birth time, can settle it with certainty.

Does my sign determine my personality?

No. The sun sign is one tone among others, not a verdict. Your complete chart — Moon, rising sign, planets, aspects — paints a far richer and more nuanced portrait. Astrology sheds light on possible tendencies; it locks no one into a box.

Can two signs be "incompatible"?

Sun-sign compatibility is only a symbolic reading grid, never a verdict. Real affinity is read across both complete charts. No combination is doomed from the start: everything can be worked on and understood.

Is the zodiac related to astronomy?

The astrological zodiac divides the sky into twelve equal sectors starting from the spring equinox; it does not correspond exactly to the constellations as an astronomer sees them today. They are two different readings of the sky — one symbolic, the other physical.
